Biographical Note

Bishop McCarthy was born April 10, 1918 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Bishop was ordained to the priesthood on May 29, 1943. He was ordained as Auxiliary Bishop to the Archbishop of Cincinnati on June 15, 1965. In 1969, Bishop Edward McCarthy was appointed the first and founding Bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix, established at that time from territories formerly in the Diocese of Tucson and the Diocese of Gallup, and was installed at SS. Simon and Jude Cathedral in Phoenix on December 2, 1969. Then on July 7, 1976, Archbishop Jean Jadot, Apostolic delegate to the United States, announced the elevation of the Most Reverend Edward A. McCarthy to the rank of Archbishop and his appointment as Archbishop of Miami, Florida. Bishop McCarthy is now retired in Miami.
